On the morning of October 2, people were heartbroken to find hundreds of dead and injured songbirds outside of Center City Philadelphia buildings.  Because songbirds migrate at night, the bright lights in combination with inclement weather, confused and disoriented the birds, often with deadly consequences.  Keith Russell from Audubon Pennsylvania and Robert Peck from the Academy of Natural Sciences penned an opinion piece in the Philadelphia Inquirer on how we can help birds during their migrations by suggesting that Philadelphia adopt a Lights Out program similar to those successfully implemented in Atlanta, Chicago, Toronto, and Wilmington.
