2022 Christmas Bird Count (RESCHEDULED TO DECEMBER 31)

Please join us for the 2022 VFAS Christmas Bird Count which will be held this year on Saturday, December 31 at various times and locations centered around Audubon PA.

The Christmas Bird Count is a census of birds in the Western Hemisphere, performed annually in the early winter by volunteers, and is the longest continuously-running community science survey in the world.  Volunteers count birds from the high Arctic all the way through South America and have been doing so since 1900. By volunteering for this event you are providing population data for use in science, especially conservation biology, which helps scientists determine the long-term population trends for birds in our area.  And it’s a fun way to break up the hustle and bustle of the holiday season with some relaxing time in the outdoors.

This annual event includes teams of birders surveying specifically assigned spots within a designated area.  Because this census takes place during the holiday season and many people travel, we can be short of volunteers for the count.  If you are in town for the holiday and want to help, please contact Vince Smith (484-410-1157, larusvs34@gmail.com).  Beginning birders are welcome to join us and will be assigned to a team with experienced members.  The more eyes and ears we can recruit, the better the survey.  Thank you in advance for your help!
