Annual Social Event and Meeting
Please join the Valley Forge Audubon Society for a fun and informative afternoon on Sunday, August 13 from 2:00-6:00 pm at our annual social event and meeting. Explore everything VFAS has to offer in a relaxed and friendly setting. There will be plenty of time for mingling and the opportunity to learn more about VFAS’s mission. Come and meet other VFAS participants, ask questions of our board members, bring your program ideas and suggestions, enjoy a great presentation, and go birding with us!
Please register for this free event by Thursday, August 10. Come for the whole afternoon or any part of it – we would really love to see you there.
The schedule of events for the afternoon will be as follows:
2:00 pm: arrival, sign-in, refreshments; meet a JJAC bird ambassador
2:30 pm: VFAS annual meeting
3:30 pm: “A Defense of the Unholy Trio” – a presentation by Billy Brown (see description below)
5:00-6:00 pm: Birding field trip around Mill Grove
Light refreshments as well as beer, wine, and soft drinks will be served.
Children are welcome to attend if accompanied by an adult.
“A Defense of the Unholy Trio”
Pigeons, starlings, and house sparrows are the most abundant and easily observed birds in urban settings. They can be entertaining to watch and to listen to. Give them a chance, and you might even appreciate their beauty! Nature writer Billy Brown discusses their history, their place in the urban food web, and why he recommends that beginning birders start with the most disrespected birds in the Philly region.
Bernard S. Brown (“Billy”) is a nature writer for Grid magazine, author of Exploring Philly Nature: A Guide for All Four Seasons, co-host of the Urban Wildlife Podcast, and cofounder of the local nature hub PhillyNature.org. He is a herper who has, against all plans and intentions, picked up birding as well. He blogs at Where the Brown Snakes Roam.
