Boating and Birding on the Schuylkill Canal
Join us for a leisurely fall paddle on the Schuylkill Canal – and for those who are interested, down a portion of the Schuylkill River, too – as we look for birds who are utilizing the waterways and adjacent areas for migrating, feeding, and resting.
Bring your own boat or rent a kayak from Port Providence Paddle (USS Port Providence Inc | Canoe and Kayak Rentals). Our 5-mile loop trip will have us paddling about 2 miles up the canal on flat water before portaging over to the Schuylkill River for a leisurely float downriver. After portaging back to the canal, we will paddle back to our starting point. For those not interested in the river portion which includes the two portages, it’s an easy return paddle down the canal to where we began.
Whether bringing your own boat or renting one, please arrive in time to be ready to launch at 10:30 am. This trip should take about 2-3 hours, after which those who are interested can gather for lunch at the adjacent Fitzwater Station tavern and restaurant (www.fitzwaterstation.com).
