Early-Birding at Welkinweir

Join us for an early morning of birdwatching at Welkinweir, a 224-acre private nature sanctuary in northern Chester County.

While year-round and winter resident birds should be plentiful, we may also be fortunate enough to find an early migrant such as a tree swallow, or perhaps we’ll spot an interesting duck or two floating on the lake. Some birds will already be singing in anticipation of spring, giving us a chance to learn their songs in a quiet setting. Welkinweir is closed to the public on weekends, so we will be able to fully experience the solitude of the wetlands, meadows, ponds, gardens, and woodlands at this special place.

All experience levels and ages are welcome and encouraged to join us, including those new to birding. Children are also welcome on all Valley Forge Audubon Society events but must be accompanied by an adult. Bring binoculars if you have them, and please wear sturdy shoes with good tread: all the footpaths are unpaved and uneven and can be muddy and slippery. Note that while most of the trails are level, there is one steep hill to navigate.

This outing will cover a little over a mile and will last about 2 hours.
