Easy-Going Birding on the Schuylkill River Trail: Spring City
This route has it all— river on one side, pond on the other, woods, fields, and a flat walking trail. These varied habitats result in great birding for nature lovers, especially in the spring. The flat, paved trail makes for easy-going birding that is welcoming and accessible for those with mobility challenges. We’ve seen everything from eagles, sharp-shinned hawks and wood ducks to great crested flycatchers, warblers, orioles and kingfishers along this trail.
We can’t wait to explore it again and hope you will join us. This route is especially good for calm mid-week birding, enjoying the beauty with less foot and bicycle traffic than on weekends. We will take about two hours for the 1+ mile out and back field trip. The path is fairly open so hats and sunglasses are recommended. Birders of all experience and capability are welcome, including children if accompanied by an adult. Bring binoculars if you have them. There are no restroom facilities available.
DIRECTIONS: We will meet at the large parking lot on Riverside Drive by the RiverEdge Shopping Center in Spring City, which is one block west of the river off of E. Bridge Street. PLEASE NOTE: Riverside Drive LOOKS LIKE A DRIVEWAY and is immediately next to the “RiverEdge Square” sign for this little strip mall.
