Evening Birding Along the Hopewell Big Woods Trail

Join DCNR Park Naturalist Jared Brandt and guides from the Valley Forge Audubon Society for an evening stroll along the ADA accessible Big Woods Trail.  Contrary to its name, this trail meanders through native meadow – a habitat type that has disappeared through much of southeastern PA – which provides refuge for a number of declining and unusual bird species which depend upon it, such as grasshopper sparrows, yellow-breasted chats, prairie warblers, and blue grosbeaks.  Indigo buntings also abound, as do panoramic views of the Schuylkill Highlands, including the Oley Hills.

The trail surface here is crushed stone and has an average grade of 3.7%.    making this outing appropriate for those with mobility limitations.  There is no shade, so sun-protective clothing and a hat are recommended.

All experience levels and ages are welcome and encouraged to join us, including those new to birding.  No restrooms are available on site but can be found at the Union Meadows East park 1.3 miles away.

No registration is required to attend this program.
