Fall Birds at Gwynedd Preserve

Gwynedd Preserve is an oasis of nature nestled among the highly developed suburbs of Blue Bell and North Wales. The meadow and forest habitats here are particularly important because they are connected to other preserved lands in the Wissahickon Creek watershed.

With the big sky and open fields, it’s a great place for viewing raptors, including red-shouldered and red-tailed hawks, northern harrier, merlin, and American kestrel. We also will be looking for resident birds, arriving migrants like yellow-bellied sapsuckers, and any late-departing migrants. The fields are good habitat for sparrows.

New birders are always welcome at VFAS programs. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult. There is one accessible restroom at the management center. Please bring binoculars if you have them. The leaders will have 2 pairs to share.

Note: Please do not park in the small parking area at the entrance. Because we will be a larger group, VFAS has been granted a larger parking area. Once you go through the gate, drive down the entrance road and park in the small lot up by the management center. You can also park along the grass in front of, and along the side of, the management center. The preserve opens at 8 but they will have the gate open for us at 7:30 am.
