Hawk Watch at Rose Tree Park

What is a hawk watch?

It’s an outdoor event where people gather to spot and count migrating raptors like hawks, eagles, and falcons. Held during the fall, it’s a perfect opportunity to learn how to ID hawks in flight – and you don’t have to be an experienced birder or even get up early to do it!

Official hawk watch counter John Mercer will be stationed at the gazebo in this Delaware County Park from 9 am until 4 pm.  He’ll be identifying raptors (and other birds) that pass by and answering questions, making this a perfect opportunity to learn from an expert.  This date is also right in the heart of the Broad-winged Hawk migration when these beautiful hawks form “kettles” – masses of soaring birds riding thermals together – which is one of the most amazing spectacles in hawk migration. With a little luck, we might see a kettle or two.

Stay for as long or as little as you like.  Bring a chair, snacks, water, and a hat/sunscreen if you are going to stay a while, although there will be shade in the gazebo.  Bring binoculars if you have them, and your curiosity.  Whether you’re a birdwatcher or just looking for a unique outdoor experience, this is a great way to spend a few minutes or a few hours – and John would love the company.
