March Madness: Avian Edition
Take a break from watching basketball and join us for an early morning of birdwatching instead at Welkinweir, a 224-acre private nature sanctuary in northern Chester County. Meet in the visitor parking lot west of the main entrance: GPS:5848+4H5
While year-round and winter resident birds should be plentiful, we may also be fortunate enough to find an early migrant such as a tree swallow, or perhaps we’ll spot an interesting duck or two floating on the lake. Some birds will already be singing in anticipation of spring, giving us a chance to learn their songs in a quiet setting. Welkinweir is closed to the public on weekends, so we will enjoy the solitude of the wetlands, meadows, ponds, gardens, and woodlands at this special place, which is also home to the Green Valleys Watershed Association.
All experience levels and ages are welcome and encouraged to join us, including those new to birding and children if accompanied by an adult. Bring binoculars if you have them, and wear sturdy shoes with good tread as all the footpaths are unpaved and uneven and can be muddy. Please note that there is also one steep hill to navigate.
This outing will cover a little over a mile and will last 2-3 hours.
A restroom is available on site.
