March Madness: Avian Edition
Take a break from watching basketball and join us for bird-watching instead at Welkinweir, a 224-acre nature sanctuary in northern Chester County. Avian winter residents will still be around along with our year-round resident birds, but we may be fortunate enough to find a few early migrants such as an Eastern Phoebe, or perhaps spot an interesting duck or two floating on the lake. Some birds will already be singing in anticipation of spring, giving us a chance to learn their songs in a quiet setting. Welkinweir is closed to the public on weekends, so we will enjoy the solitude of the wetlands, meadows, ponds, gardens, and woodlands at this special place, which is also home to the Green Valleys Watershed Association.
All experience levels and ages are welcome and encouraged to join us, including those new to birding and children if accompanied by an adult. Bring binoculars if you have them, and wear sturdy shoes with good tread as all the footpaths are unpaved and uneven and can be muddy; there is also one steep hill to navigate.
Meet in the visitor parking lot west of the main entrance.
This outing will cover a little over a mile and will last 2-3 hours. A restroom is available on site.
