Memorable Birds on Memorial Day

Goose Run Park (Douglass Township, Berks County) consists of 82.5
acres of open space and wooded trails.  On this Memorial Day we will search for the blue of Indigo Buntings, the red of Scarlet Tanagers, and the white of White-breasted Nuthatches as well as two species that are declining in numbers due to habitat loss: the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark.

It is important to follow these directions:

Goose Run Park has two entrances; we will meet at the gravel parking lot off of Levengood Road (NOT Goose Run Road.  Do NOT put Goose Run Park into your GPS.)  From Hwy 100 North, take the Farmington exit.  Turn left onto Farmington Rd for 0.7 miles, then a slight left onto Evans Rd for 0.4 miles. Turn left onto Colebrookdale Rd.  In 1 mile, turn left onto Levengood Rd.  Continue for about 0.6 miles around the bend to the gravel parking lot on the right.

Masks are not required for this outdoor program, although VFAS encourages all participants to be fully vaccinated and asymptomatic to attend.  Beginners and children (accompanied by an adult) are very welcome to attend.  Bring binoculars if you have them; a hat and/or sunscreen are also recommended.  This will be a walk of up to 2 miles on earthen paths.  No restroom is available at the park, but there are restrooms at the nearby Sly Fox Brewery, which has outdoor seating and pub food, if anyone is interested in going there after the walk.
