The Red-headed Woodpeckers of Crow’s Nest Preserve

Red-headed woodpeckers are rare in most of Valley Forge Audubon Society’s southeastern Pennsylvania chapter territory, but they have found a home at Crow’s Nest Preserve in northern Chester County.   If you have never seen one and are hoping to, join us for this afternoon excursion as we seek the resident “flying checkerboards” that have been living in this Natural Lands preserve the last two winters.

If we are lucky enough to spot a red-headed woodpecker – we know the spot where one has been hanging out regularly since last September – that would give us a chance to tally all seven of the woodpeckers that are in our area right now.  Join us as we talk ‘all things woodpecker’ during this afternoon excursion – although we will not ignore any of the other birds we come across, of course.

Please bring binoculars if you have them.  The trails here are earthen and can be muddy and uneven.  Beginning birders and children who are accompanied by an adult are always welcome on Valley Forge Audubon Society outings.
