Wintry Wednesday Birding at Marsh Creek SP

Whether or not there is ice on the lake or snow on the ground, a great diversity of birds can be found at Marsh Creek SP in the winter.

The centerpiece of the park, 535-acre Marsh Creek Lake, is the largest and deepest body of water in Chester County, so parts of it remain unfrozen even in the coldest weather as a refuge for ducks, grebes, geese, gulls, and even loons.  The fields and woods which surround the lake harbor a great variety of songbirds such as kinglets, woodpeckers, chickadees, sparrows, and creepers as well as raptors.

We will meet at the boat house parking lot at the main day use area on Park Rd (not on the west side!) where we will scan the lake with our shared spotting scope.  Then our route will take us along the shoreline of the lake and into the woods before we loop back to our starting point, travelling about a mile on a mixture of gravel and earthen paths.

Dress warmly – the wind off the lake can be biting.  Please bring binoculars if you have them and if you have a spotting scope you may want to bring that too.  All ages and experience levels are welcome, including those new to birding.  A portable toilet is available on site.
