Woodpeckers – From “The Flying Checkerboard” to “Yellowhammer”

Woodpeckers are a favorite backyard bird, adding a lot of color and personality everywhere they occur. But how much do you really know about woodpeckers?

Join us for an informative presentation about the seven species of woodpeckers that are native to our area of Southeastern PA.  This program will provide some of the keys for identifying the different local species – six that are here year-round and one that is only found locally in the winter – along with fun facts about these extraordinary birds.  We will also discuss some of the fascinating adaptations of woodpeckers, including how they survive all that head-banging!

Presenter John Werth is an avid birder and a volunteer with the Valley Forge Audubon Society (VFAS).  John leads birding field trips, conducts virtual talks on birds, and also does in-person presentations such as this for VFAS.
